Filariasis

Saturday, 9 May, 2009

Flariasis is a disease transmitted by parasitic thread like worms called nematodes. The life cycle of a nematode parasite consists of five stages and they enter the human body at the third stage through bites or wounds on the skin. The filarial infection most often appears as large inflammatory reaction and hence is severe threat. The treatment involves oral chemotherapy, use of antibiotics, surgical excision. The disease can also be avoided by vector control, keeping mosquitoes away and the molecular engineering which is today being applied to make mosquitoes filarial resistant. The parasite affects the host in several ways and hence the treatment also differs.
